Soybean Rust

Your plants should look like this

Don't wait until they look like this.

Facts about Soybean Rust:

  • Asian soybean rust is the more virulent form of soybean rust and has reduced soybean yields in Brazil as much as 80%.

  • Ideal temperature for soybean rust growth is between 68 and 77 degrees.

  • Moisture for 6 to 12 hours increase chance of rust growth.

  • Soybeans are  most vulnerable during flowering stages, R-1 to R-6.  During this stage, there is a medium canopy.

  • Rust infestation usually begins at lower canopy directly over the soil surface.

  • Should put fungicides down within a week once rust has been detected within your area.

Controlling Soybean Rust:

Rust resistant or tolerant varieties of soybean would be the most effective mechanism of control; however, all current strains of soybean have been test and none have been found tolerant.  “Research is ongoing , but such varieties sill are five to ten years away, “ says Neal Bredenhoeft, American Soybean Association President.

Currently, Fungicides are the only treatments for containing rust by decreasing the number of spores.

Materials for Applying Fungicide:

  • Researches state application of fungicide in growing regions will need to be as followed: (growers should wait 14 to 20 days between applications)

  • Southern soybean growers will need 2 or 3 applications

  • Midwest growers should need 1 or 2 application

  • Its important to fully coat the plant for fungicide so proper spray rigs, nozzles, adjuvants, and trained operators are needed.

Nozzle choice:

  • Large number of small to medium sized droplets from a nozzle that will spray into the canopy and reach lower leaves are recommended.

  • Twin flat fan nozzles recommended

How NCI Can Help You Combat Rust:

Specialty liquid applicators – high clearance self propelled units, pull types, and truck mounted sprayers,

Slow application speed, high pressure, and high volume are critical equipment variables for fungicide application.  Let NCI help you get equipment that will help to lessen the affect of rust on your harvest.

In partnership with Tee Jet and Mid-Tech, NCI wants to assist our customers in combating rust:

Purchase any Tee Jet or Mid-Tech Lightbar system and get 36 FREE Turbo Tee Jet Duo Nozzle Assemblies

The Guidance system will ensure spraying accuracy and warn you when you overlap into previously applied areas decreasing your waste while ensuring your entire crop is protected.

Tee Jet Duo Nozzles are ideal for combat rust because:

  • Dual flat spray allows canopy penetration & coverage

  • Can produce range of droplet sizes from very fine to extremely coarse.

  • Suited for light, medium, and heavy canopy densities
